Food for the mind and soul
Just like bad TV is considered junk food for the mind, there is such thing as good , wholesome food for the soul.... i dont know about you but for me i know what it is.
A really good book, a really stirring, memorable novel, something that really makes me sit up and really enjoy it or in other words not be able to put it down, here's a list A) Atonement ( 8/10) Ok, i confess i read this book cos i was curious what the fuss was all about, and i realised what it was, the text was so rich and engaging, and the story was so moving and powerful, a true testimont to the fact that moments with ones we love can last forever i was amazed and yeah, it did deserve all the credit it got b) Lulabbies for little criminals ( 9/10) I really dont know what made me pick up this book, but i did and didnt regret it one bit. The story is centred around a little 11 yr old girl living with her drug -addicted father in Montreal, she eventually runs away from home and ends up living on the streets, gets hooked on drugs and sells herself, the story spans about 2-3 yrs of th girls life. Sounds pretty dark huh? well the thing about this book was it wasnt wallowing in self-pity and a depressing read it was upbeat and had sort of a cheerful, slightly light-hearted tone to it, it wasnt all heavy and dark. I really enjoyed this book, along with it's ( finally ) happy ending c) CUrrent one im reading now- After dark - Originally written in japanese, from the first page, i thought this book would be boring but i was wrong, it was FAAAR from it. I have never really read a book like this, this book really allows you to get into the book, its not only engaging but it's slightly mysterious and a little bit dark, also in a supernatural kind of way, i wouldn;t use the word wierd but i could almost envision this book in a comic strip type of format, the type of description it really makes you create scenes from the book in your head and you almost feel like you are there with the characters as the story unfolds - Im not finished reading this book yet, but it;s really fasicinating, basically the story is set between the hours of midnight at seven am, hence the title. The story revolves around several characters, all interconnected in one way or another. A young girl reading at a dennys at 1am, a beaten up prostitute at a " love hotel" a troubled young japanese woman who suddenly loses sense of herself. All in all, a fabulous read Music Ok, so maybe your music tastes defer from mine, but i always figured annoying pop music or music with little meaning or substance was much like unhealthy junk food. Yesh it is addictive and fun to watch but at the same time, its bad ( and corrosive sometimes) Some music that i like I personally like singer-songwriter type music, where its all stripped down to just the artist and their guitar or piano or whatever they're instrument they're playing. Jason mraz just released an EP, his newest single " im yours " has a really smooth, down-to-earth, fluid tone to it. take a listen |
